Like many in the Silicon Valley bubble, Megan had embraced self-driving technology with open arms. The promise of a safer, more convenient commute felt like a glimpse into the future. But that future, as she would soon discover, still had bumps in the road.
As the vehicle merged onto the 101, Megan glanced at the news on her tablet. Another headline flashed across the screen: “Waymo Vehicle Involved in Minor Collision in Phoenix Suburb.” She sighed. It wasn’t the first report she’d seen, and certainly wouldn’t be the last. Despite the marketing buzz and bold promises from tech giants, a question lingered in her mind and in the minds of millions around the world: Are self-driving cars actually safe?
The Promise vs. Reality
The dream of self-driving cars is nothing new. For decades, automakers and tech companies have been working toward a future where humans can sit back, relax, and let the car do all the thinking. The benefits seem obvious: reduced human error (which causes 94% of traffic accidents), increased mobility for the elderly and disabled, reduced traffic congestion, and fewer emissions due to optimized driving.
Yet, for all the futuristic potential, the reality is far more complex.
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) operate using a blend of sensors, cameras, radar, LiDAR, and advanced AI algorithms to perceive their surroundings and make decisions in real time. This combination should, in theory, make them more aware and reactive than human drivers. But in practice, they’re still prone to errors, especially when real-world conditions stray from the training data they’ve been fed.
What Is the Biggest Problem with Self-Driving Cars?
The biggest challenge facing self-driving technology isn’t just about the hardware or software, it’s edge cases and contextual awareness. Edge cases are unusual or rare scenarios that don’t occur frequently enough to train AI on reliably: a child chasing a ball onto the street, a bicyclist swerving unexpectedly, or a pedestrian standing halfway in a crosswalk during a thunderstorm.
Unlike humans, who can intuitively handle these complex and nuanced situations, autonomous systems often struggle. They lack the “common sense” reasoning that humans acquire through experience.
And then there’s the issue of communication. Humans often rely on eye contact, gestures, or subtle social cues when navigating intersections, yielding, or deciding who has the right-of-way. AVs can’t replicate this kind of unspoken coordination, yet.
In short, while AI can handle a lot of driving tasks well, understanding human unpredictability remains a major roadblock.
What Is the Crash Rate of Self-Driving Cars?
Statistically, autonomous vehicles are involved in more accidents per million miles driven than human-driven cars, but here’s the catch: most of these are minor.
A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the crash rate for AVs was 9.1 crashes per million miles, compared to 4.1 crashes per million miles for conventional vehicles. However, nearly all of the AV-related crashes involved low-speed incidents like rear-end collisions, usually because a human driver rear-ended a cautious AV that braked too suddenly.
It’s important to note that AVs are programmed to err on the side of caution. They drive conservatively, often to a fault, and that behavior can confuse or frustrate human drivers who are used to a more assertive style.
The good news? Fatal crashes involving self-driving vehicles are still extremely rare, but they have happened.
How Often Do Self-Driving Cars Fail?
Failures in AV systems don’t always mean catastrophic crashes. More often, they involve disengagements, where a human driver is forced to take over control of the vehicle due to a system error or uncertainty.
California’s Department of Motor Vehicles publishes annual reports on AV disengagements. In 2023, Waymo reported only 0.02 disengagements per 1,000 miles in certain regions, which is a dramatic improvement from just a few years earlier. Cruise, another AV operator, showed similar progress.
However, these numbers can be misleading. Companies tend to test in favorable conditions (good weather, mapped urban areas) and avoid high-risk environments like snowy regions or chaotic rural roads. As a result, real-world reliability across diverse scenarios remains unproven.
Has Anyone Been Hit by a Self-Driving Car?
Tragically, yes.
In March 2018, an Uber autonomous test vehicle struck and killed Elaine Herzberg, a pedestrian walking her bicycle across a street in Tempe, Arizona. It was the first known fatality involving a self-driving car and a pedestrian. The car’s safety driver was reportedly watching videos on her phone and failed to intervene in time. The system had also failed to correctly classify Herzberg as a pedestrian in time to stop.
